Ice skating at lake Weissensee

Ice skating on winter holidays: Weissensee in Carinthia freezes over every year and invites you to go ice skating. Whether ice hockey, speed skating, cross-country skiing, walking or normal skating on natural ice, it is a special experience for the whole family and must not be missed during a holidays at the Glocknerhof.

Lake Weissensee becomes the largest natural ice surface in Austria in winter. The ice surface, up to 40 cm thick, has given the lake a reputation that is unique in Europe. From mid-December, the lake attracts guests and locals for ice skating, cross-country skiing and relaxing walks. Small children like to be dragged on the toboggan.

Trip to lake Weissensee

The Weissensee is located very close to the Hotel Glocknerhof and is definitely worth a trip. In addition to ice skating, many other winter sports can be enjoyed in winter. Furthermore, there is a skiing area with a natural toboggan run at the Weissensee. There is something for everyone. And after the winter excursion, relax in the wellness area and indoor pool in the hotel and let yourself be pampered in the restaurant.

Equipment rental & parking

Cross-country skiing equipment and toboggans are available free of charge at our hotel. Everything else like ice skates, ice hockey sticks and puck, skis, snowboards etc. can be rented on site or directly at the Weissensee (north of the bridge).

Please note that there is a parking fee at Weissensee (offsetting with ski pass) and a fee for the use of ice and cross-country ski trails. We have current brochures on display at the reception desk and will be happy to provide you with information.

Ice skating race at lake Weissensee

Regular events and ice skating races are held on the ice of Weissenseein winter. Especially for the famous “Alternative Dutch 11 Cities Tour” at the end of January, more than 50 length kilometers of ice will be prepared. Check the dates and join in the fun. The ice marathon spectacle at the end of January attracts up to 5,000 speed skaters, skaters and winter triathletes from all over Europe to Weissensee every year. Three marathon disciplines over 50, 100 and 200 km are available.

Sport on the natural ice

Not only those who like to strap on their skates and do their rounds on the ice are in the right place. There is also room for many other sports at the frozen Weissensee. At Weissensee, dedicated areas are provided for ice hockey and curling, trails are groomed for cross-country skiing, and sunny paths are laid out for romantic winter walks along the lake.

Investments were made in the quality of the cross-country skiing network at Weissensee and, in the course of this, a biathlon center with a biathlon laser shooting facility was also built.

Ice skating at the ice rink in the village

Directly in our community in the district of Tratten south of the Drava River there is a small ice skating rink – easily and quickly accessible. The first weeks of February are dedicated to the sport of ice shooting.
